Only 170 kms north of Delhi by road, Rishikesh is a good weekend destination. Far from the madding crowds in such proximity, one could enjoy white-water rafting Shivpuri 16 kms from Rishikesh down the Ganges one day, trekking in the shadow of the Himalayas the next, put the feet up and relax in hill stations, go camping at the hill tops or take a jeep safari on a hunt for tigers at Corbett and Rajaji National Parks. This holy town long known as an important base for sages going on pilgrimage to the snow peaks of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, now is known worldwide as the capital of yoga. All around the hills and the main town itself, which lie sprawled around the holy Ganga, are numerous ashrams where one can learn this ancient practice of wellness and spiritual healing.
