The monsoon magic of Mandu is one of India’s most evocative cultural delights. The misty glory of the ruined palaces and pavilions are rich with atmospherics and a huge draw for heritage buffs and honeymooning couples. A forbidding hilltop fortification which created the legend of the great romance of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati, Mandu was an important post of the Sultans of Malwa at the end of the 13th century. The sultans were responsible for the lavish palaces (the Jehaz Mahal and Hindola Mahal) pleasure pavilions, baths and canals that punctuated this historic fort city. Elaborate gardens were set down as a wondrous foil to the fine ornamentation to be found scattered across the city’s many palaces and pavilions. The Jami Masjid and the Hoshang Shah Tomb are considered to be true architectural marvels.
