The two-day festival of Teej welcomes the rainy season with great jubilation in Rajasthan’s Pink City in the monsoon months of July-August. Traditionally under the auspices of the royal family Jaipur witnesses a fabulous procession of Mata Parvati or Teej Mata rich in pageantry, which, led by beautifully caparisoned elephants, horses and camels, proceeds from the Tripolia Gate, past several markets before terminating at Chaugan Stadium. Centric to the festivities is the worship of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati with whom he is reunited after a long absence. Apart from celebrating the love between a man and his wife Teej also celebrates the rejuvenation of the earth after a hot and punishing summer. The spiritual aspect of the festival is reflected in women praying for the deities’ blessings of the deities, for a happy and prosperous married life while the men worshipfully ask for a bumper harvest to be readied before the onset of Dussehra. The exuberance of a rejuvenated earth finds voice in the joyful songs sung by young maidens swaying on flower-entwined swings the Sawan ke jhooley in the city gardens and courtyards. All over the city are a slew of cultural activities which locals and tourists can enjoy. The pageantry ends with the immersion of the idol of Teej mata at the at Taal Katora pond.
