The cinematic splendour of the Thar Desert, as viewed from the endless sand dunes of Sam and Khuri, the drama of the golden fort rearing up against a blue sky and the beautifully preserved havelis and temples of this once lonely trading outpost on the ancient caravan route to the Silk Road is ceaseless in its allure for tourists. As you wander the inviting, tightly packed lanes of this living fortification (it’s been continuously inhabited since it was first commissioned in 1196 by Rawal Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput ruling these parts), your senses will get all the stimulation that a holiday in exotic Rajasthan brings to mind.
