India’s ancient ties with Rome were discovered here by chance, a short distance from the colonial enclave of Pondicherry in this coastal fishing village near the waters of the estuary of the River Ariyankuppam. Wandering around the area you may still come upon glass remains from the Roman amphorae, pottery shards and beads. Excavations revealed the site was inhabited on and off from 2nd BC to 12th AD. Points of interest here are the ruins of the 17th century Mission House and the 12th century Draupadi Temple to be found along the way back to Pondicherry, known for the firewalkers who seek a boon from the goddess.
